Its been a long time!!

It has been some time since I last updated the site, and of course the "Recent Finds" page. A lot of things have transpired around here: New cars, new backyards, at least 4 long trips here and there, selling at Alameda twice, having to redo my computers, new dogs and cats, and of course: New Tiles!!  :-)

I actually have found quite a few things here and there and I will try to remember to include all of them here. Amongst the tiles, I have managed to find some really cool pottery pieces, as well as a large Roycroft tray at the thrift store for $10.95  Now you cant beat that!!

Here are the really cool pottery items that I have come across:

Early in June down in Santa Monica, the California Heritage Museum had its yearly tile and pottery show. If you have not attended this show I would highly recommend it to anyone. The venue is one of the best around and the buys are plentiful. The best dealers around sell there, and they bring the "STUFF"  I had planned on going there with a large wad of cash in my pocket looking to find some treasures, but something great happened a few days before the show that prevented me. It just so happened that a nice lady from LA had put a GREAT BIG D&M tile on ebay and I had to have it. I bid high and won it (to my surprise). This tile is very very rare and of the best quality. The size is 12x12 (yep that's one sq foot!!) and the artwork is wonderful to say the least. D&M is of course my favorite company and always will be, and this tile is a great example of why I like them so much. I dropped the tile off in Bakersfield to have it set in a nice frame that will keep it safe from damage.

D&M and Malibu are the only companies that I know of that produced 12x12 inch tiles in this style. There were of course large tiles produced by Calco and Batchelder, but these tiles were done in the relief and polychrome style. Needless to say, this tile is a treasure and when I am 80 years old, you can come and buy it from me. Who knows what it will be worth then???

I bought this little gem from Scott Wells right before I left the show. This 6x6 tile was produced by D&M

This is another D&M tile that I found on ebay. Earlier this year, I missed out on one of these as I was not the high bidder in an online auction. When this tile came up, I was very happy to hit the "Buy it Now" button!!  This 8" tile is another example of the work that D&M created that was not necessarily in the Spanish/California theme. I have seen quite a few of the 8" tiles in the polo theme and the English theme come from back east. I believe that our friends out here in CA were making tile treasures for our friends out there on the east coast. I am not sure how popular these tiles were, but at least they gave it a shot at spreading some Golden California fever to the people back east. This one is also being set into a nice iron frame to compliment the artwork.

Here are the different tile items that I have found since the last update:

Most recently, I purchased these two pieces from some great dealers on ebay. While I was browsing on ebay, I just by chance hit the "back" button and saw this tile table that had just come up with a buy it now price, and I bought it. In talking with the dealer, he explained to me that the table was not up for sale on ebay for more than 30 seconds!!  Now I call that a SNIPE!!  :-) The tile work I had not seen before until this last tile show mentioned above. Bauer Bob had a loose set for sale in his booth. They are quite striking to look at, and this set utilizes the matte glazes seen on some of Taylors best work. The medallion in the middle is a nice touch as well. These tiles are truly artwork.

I decided to drive to pick up the table so that it would not be damaged (I hate UPS!!!!) and when I met up with the dealer, he showed me a second set of tiles that he had for sale. He asked me if I would like to buy them and I said  NO!!!   Just kidding!

I call this particular set the " 7 Layer Dip " tiles due to the colors in them. They really are quite nice and it is always nice to have the border tiles. These tiles were produced by Taylor probably around 1930-31. This is actually the 3rd set of these tiles that I have owned and I do NOT get sick of seeing them.
